The Java Proxy Server is a minimalist proxy server that allows two or more computers to share an Internet connection. This, the first version, does HTTP only; that is, it handles web pages only -- not FTP yet. It is not a firewall, nor is it a filter for web pages (yet). It's main redeeming quality is that once it is started on the machine that is connected to the internet, all that people on other machines on the network have to do is to tell their web browsers to use a proxy server and point them at the machine and port on which the Java Proxy Server was started. Compare this to trying to get Internet Connection Sharing started with Windows 98, and besides, this program can run anywhere that has a Java Virtual Machine and can serve web pages for any HTTP client.
For a free firewall (for a Windows machine), an excellent complement to a free proxy server, go to the Zone Alarm web site. For instructions on installing and using the Java Proxy Server, see its readme file.
